Hot and humid. That's the forecast for the next several days, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah.
Friday's 97-degree weather and today's 98-degree forecast has prompted the NWS to issue a heat advisory.
"We have the combination of the heat and humidity," said Meteorologist David Blanchard.
"The heat is one thing -- it's a problem for the elderly or the very young," he said. "But the humidity is pretty high too... Humidity affects the body's ability to dissipate heat."
The humidity right now is so high that it will take the heat index to somewhere between 100 and 105 degrees.
"It will be pretty oppressive out there," Blanchard said.
Temperatures will cool off to about 93 degrees on Sunday, due to a chance of rain that day, he said.
While there's a heat advisory in place, Blanchard advised people against "strenuous" activities during the hottest times of the day.
The heat advisory is to alert people to the chance of heat-related illnesses if they are out in the hot weather, he said.
Looking at the days ahead, Blanchard said, "there's no relief in sight. It's going to be kind of warm. For the foreseeable future, it's hot and humid."
Because it will be so warm, The Gathering Place, 1817 N. Elm St., is opening its doors as a cooling center. People can go there between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
